BlueDragon goes Open Source

March 10, 2008 · 7 Comments

I just read over a Vince Bonfanti's blog that BlueDragon/J2EE is going Open Source! This is great news for the future of CFML as the barrier to entry has gone for people wanting to host and developer CFML based applications. Read more over at Vince's blog http://blog.newatlanta.com/index.cfm?mode=entry&entry=EABF951D-453A-486E-9647E2825D1E6F39

Quite the interesting news. Wonder why they didn't wait until Wed? Also wonder how this will shake up the CF world.

I think this is a good move, as for people that are always moaning about the price, this shuts them up... CFML can then live on both in commercial and non-commercial terms.

Of course, they have released the J2EE version which I guess is in direct competition to Adobe's CF Standard version (I havent compared the versions yet)

BD J2EE is competition to CF Enterprise.

BD JX is competition to CF Standard

    BD.NET is ... on it's own.

Whoo hoo! More details will be good but it looks like they are using GPLv2 ... They mention having to remove some things due to third party technologies - wonder what those consist of...

Adobe is probably happy - New Atlanta can take the hit on this experiment and Adobe can sit back and watch the results... Though they need to be careful - if this takes off - they will be behind the curve.

It would be interesting to see if any of the current CF hosting companies will adopt?

It's great that it is open source, but then again so is CFECLIPSE, and how many people from the CF Community actually help out? How many know Java Enough to contribute?

I'd be interested to see how many developers they currently have on the Commercial Edition and how many of them know Java enough to help out ;)

seems a weird way round of doing it...open sourcing the equivalent of the CF enterprise version. Does that mean that the community will contribute to the j2ee version and then NA add those features into JX/.Net version, a way of getting the community to build their commercial versions effectively? - Doesn't that mean there could be a fork in functionality/compatibility between the products? I guess we'll have to wait and see until more details emergy. Sounds promising though!!

@johnb: exactly the same issue is with oen source version of blazeds.
@mark: maybe you can reuse some bd code to make cfeclipse better.
