MacBook naming competition

March 23, 2007 · 38 Comments

Next week I shall (Hopefully!) be receiving my new black MacBook. This laptop has the following specs as its designed as a presentation laptop rather than a main production machine:
  • 2.00GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM-2x512 (not a lot of Parallels actions going on with this machine I guess)
  • 120GB Serial ATA @ 5400 rpm (Fat presentations man, fat presentations)
  • Superdrive 6x (To read those CD's and DVD's they give out at conferences)
  • No Modem (Who uses a modem nowadays? At a pinch its bluetooth and my mobile!)
  • iWorks '06-Z (for the presentations! I have to justify it somehow)
  • Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter (Can you believe I had to buy this as an extra??)
Now, here comes the competition, well, kind of. There is no prize really, but I need to name this machine, and I have clean run out of ideas. I had some like "CFE_ONE" or "MR_Presento" but still, nothing good comes to mind. My MacBook Pro is actually named HAL after the computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey, which as you can tell isn't very imaginative hence my call for ideas! (This little puppy will be travelling to all the conferences this summer and showing you all the top secret projects so you will get to see the computer name in case you win!)

If the main machine is called HAL, surely the new one has to be called Dave? B->

  • 2 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

Na, I mean, Dave.. that is just a name (ok, I know HAL is also just a name) but I am called Mark, and it would be confusing...
  • 3 Cliff Pearson // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

I'm sure you could handle it! B->

A few quotes in case anyone doesn't get the connection (a slim possibility, given the audience, I know! B->):

Open the pod bay doors please, HAL.

    I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Look Dave, I can see you're really upset about this. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill and think things over.

Dave...my mind is going...I can feel it...I can feel it.

    Discovery ?
Fits with the 2001 theme (it was the ship HAL was in charge of), and also says something about what your presentations let people do.

Actually, I just had a though, I could call it "Preacher" since that is what its used for, and it follows from my graphic novel obsession.

(Jessie Custer, the Preacher, had a being inside him called Genesis that gave him the voice of God, which meant that he could tell people what to do and they HAD to obey him)

More info on the Preacher here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preacher_%28comics%29
  • 8 Cliff Pearson // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

So you get to win your own competition? Doesn't seem right to me. B->

I have an idea: Preacher! After some comic or other. B->

I was just trying to move it away from 2001 :)
  • 10 Jeff Self // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

    How about Rosebud?
  • 11 Cliff Pearson // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

    ROFPMSL!

    </cliff>

    1. Colossus (or Guardian) from "The Forbin project".
    2. Chaperone. When people ask "Is that your chaperone?" you can say "It's pronounced Chapper 1". Hilarity ensues.

I've worked for three different clients who had their servers named after Star Wars, Lord Of The RIngs and Simpsons characters respectively, but these names are so 1999.

Still, it raised a few laughs when people raised support tickets that they were having problems getting into Lisa! B->

We need more imagination! Given your involvement with Eclipse and the fact that it's a Black MacBook, how about DarkSide?

    </cliff>
  • 14 Mike Rankin // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

How about "Corona". You know, the light behind an eclipse. AND as a bonus, it's also a beer (sorta).
  • 15 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

Rosebud? Maybe Redrum to go with the Kubrik vibe?

Darkside? I dunno, its Eclipse based but you know... Dark to me is legative.

I like Corona but I would be going straight for the JD afterwards, and I guess Corona_with_a_JD_chaser is a bit of a long name?
  • 16 Tom Chiverton // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

    "Corona_with_a_JD_chaser"
/me makes frantic notes for Scotch on the Rocks
  • 17 Lola LB // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

How about Firefly? Or Serenity . . .
  • 18 Matt Woodward // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

General comment on the black MacBook--you'll love it. I've had mine for a few weeks now and it's a fantastic little machine. Concerning VM, I did upgrade the RAM to 2GB and I have an XP Pro VM on here that I gave 512MB of RAM and it runs great.
  • 19 Jamie Badman // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

Since it's a 'Mac' how about 'Willie' after Groundskeeper Willie, the mad Simpson's Scotsman...

    Jamie.
  • 20 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

@Matt: I love my MacBook Pro, I am dubious about the shiny screen though? It wont be my main dev box, but at least I wont break my back carrying it all the time!

@Jamie: all my machines are Mac, so its like the regular Clan McCloud so I could also call it Duncan, or... Highlander!
  • 21 Jamie Badman // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

    Ah that's a shame!

How about BlacMac ? Or... 'Idi' - the 'Last King of Scotland'!
  • 22 Michael Lokner // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

Since I'm a Star Wars geek I give all my computers and devices a name from the movies. And if this black little beauty should be used for presentations - how about Amidala or R2-D2. My 1 TB external dick is called "space slug", it eats about everything...
  • 23 Michael Lokner // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

Way to go Michael. It should of course be DISK and nothing else. ;)
  • 24 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

Actually my External Drive is called Optimus, Hal (all robots/AI's right?) so I like the way you are thinking...

    Any black/Eclipse related robots?
  • 25 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

Keep that external disk internal, for the sake of the children! :)
  • 26 Cliff Pearson // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

If you didn't like Dave, I suppose Jack is a non-starter.

How about DarkStar? A wonderful parody of 2001, amongst other Sci-fi films. The scene with the giant tomato alien chasing one of the protagonists around the spacecraft is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

But then, I'm easily pleased! B->

In case anyone hasn't seen it.

    Name your new Mac: John_Daniels.

Here in the U.S., when you want to order a Jack and Coke, you ask for a 'Mr. John Daniels'.
  • 29 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

Damn .. you guys are nuts... why John? and who is this John Doe guy everone is talking about?

Shiny, black, shows you marvellous things... cant you people come up with something that I can live with showing up on my terminal window???

    Monolith?

    </cliff>
  • 31 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

    Monolith I like!!!

Ties in with the 2001 theme, and brings to mind a black-shiny-thing-that-shows-you-stuff-and-is-clever.

Well done Cliff! You have won!

Now, I have to sit back and wait for the damn laptop!
  • 32 Cliff Pearson // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

    Thank you, thank you!

I'd like to thank the academy, my parents and, of course, the supreme being - that's right, the Flying Spaghetti Monster!

    B->

If you want to stick with a Kubrik theme, but not a proper name, you could call it 'Droog', as in 'There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs' from A Clockwork Orange.
  • 34 Stephen Moretti // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

    How about "doorstop"?

Can you tell I have an ingrained hatred of Macs? ;)
Mind you - Macs these days are either linux boxes pretending to be Mac or PC's pretending to be Macs - so maybe I should take a look when I win the lottery. :)
  • 35 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

I think Macs are best of both worlds, I can run Ubuntu, Windows and OS X on my machines... on PC's you can just about get round to running Vista... anywas, I shall have NONE of the Mac Vs PC flamewars here. Lets just say mine is bigger than yours and my daddy can beat up your daddy and then go back into class before the teacher smacks us round the back of the head.
  • 36 Doug Laakso // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

    How about "Mr Microphone"?
  • 37 Mark Drew // Sep 22, 2008 at 4:12 PM

    Mr Cellophane?
  • 38 Reinhard Jung // Apr 29, 2009 at 5:04 PM
